Sex Life in IIT Delhi

Just why India’s brainiest kids don’t make love.

[Text by Zubin Saini; picture by Seema Kumar; the author is an IIT Delhi alumni presently pursuing MBA in IIM Calcutta. His blog is currently re-telling the story of Mahabharat. The photographer has nothing to do with the views expressed here.]

Welcome to IIT Delhi (IITD). Here boys are hungry for sex. Who can blame them? In a ‘good’ batch, the male-female ratio is 8:1; in a typical batch, it is 20:1. Besides, those females who manage to crack the JEE are, in all probability, unlikely to win any beauty awards. Even then the skewed ratio makes them queens. The boys become their slaves or the navel-gazers at Basant Lok’s Priya, or both.

But first, meet the three male types in IITD.

The Stud

Handsome and rich, he is most likely a Delhiwalla. Always believes that beauty*intelligence = constant. He tries his hands at girls from adjoining female colleges (Gargi, LSR). But because of the reputation of IITians (no social manners, sexually frustrated, good at nothing but engineering), the enterprise usually ends in failure. Not surprisingly, he often finds refuge in watching porn. He is not ashamed of it.

The Stud’s Best Friend

He is the quintessential IITian. He too likes watching porn but is ashamed to confess it. A simpleton hailing from a godforsaken mofussil town (Mirzapur, Darbhanga), he regularly goes to Priya and PVR to ogle at girls there. He has simple ambitions and is happy to settle for the female classmate sitting next to him (she might not be beautiful, but she is pretty smart. She will make a good wife.) After countless workshops, assignments, treats and movies together, when he finally mumbles "I think I love you," the female, not a fool herself, says, "but you know, I don't think of you that way. You are my best friend".

The Geek

Smartest kid. He pays attention to books, and only books, in the first year, gets great grades, and consequently catches attention of sexy girls (whatever that means in IITD context), who want him to teach them. He too loves watching porn but avoid boasting about it.

Let’s confess that sex in IITD is pretty common. It helps there are plenty of jhaadis (shrubs) in the campus. Alas, due to reasons mentioned in the begining, the only people who do it happens to be people from outside the campus. But look at exceptions:

A senior of mine (a superstud, if ever there was one) dated only model-types. Each month he changed his girlfriend. Once he was caught having sex with the girlfriend-of-the-month – by a security guard (!)

A batch mate once climbed the roof of a Professor’s house whose daughter was/is/will be the hottest chick in IITD. He spent the night with her (!)

One night a junior was caught naked with his IITian girlfriend in a block – again by a security guard (!)

But as I said, these are rare instances of stumbling into an oasis in an otherwise sandy desert. However, the opening of a booze bar just outside IITD has made it easier for boys and girls to get drunk together. They even plan sex. But plans remain just plans. Deep inside, most of us IITians are conservative, and believe that there must be no sex before marriage. This was true when I joined in 2001, and remained true when I graduated in 2006.

It is an interesting post. It tell us about the youth culture and also how while we Indians always have sex in the mind we are also held back by our cultural training. The author has done a fine job but being a woman, I will also be interested in know the point of view of a woman IITian. Mayank should try to get hold of one.

Looks like the watchman is watching nothing other than you guys making weak attempts at sex!

Now quite clearly, if a person could even have a wank to please himself, he'd have figured out by the age of seventeen that it's no use going to IIT and ruining your youth. So there.
As for the girls there, I'd rather do Fiona from Shrek.

ahh, very conservative and male centered! SHame!

Hey dude, it is so straight. Boys only running after girls. What about boys with boys? There are no gays in IITD? Can't believe it.

Nikhil said...

Sorry PJ no GAYS in IITD, atleast i don't know any: never came across /heard of one in my 4 years of eventful stay at the campus

Anonymous said...

Well, I've heard enough gay stories of IIT although I never studied there... People say they may not really be homosexual but are frustrated enough to try it because of lack of sex.

Varun said...

Whom is the author kidding?
Everyone and anyone who has been in touch with a "normal" IITian knows they like every other guy yearn to get laid. Calling themselves "conservative" is another was of notating "The grapes are sour".
Simple case why does this culture of conservatism change when they come out of IIT (although i think its in IIT too just that they dont get the chance) where they are trying to HIT on any and every other girl in their arms reach. So much so Ive seen IItians sacrifice years of friendship if it fetches them close proximity with someone of the opposite sex.
No offenses meant (personally I think IITians are the best guys to know in the world) but - IITians CONSERVATIVE. REALLY??

The gays don't go to IIT,they go to NIFT! ;)

ROTFL! Kickass post! I especially liked the description of the three categories!

I really don't understand what the big deal is. My personal understanding is that, the more you restrict something...(sex, alcohol etc)the more people are going to be curious about that particular subject. Sex is an action that results (usually) from intimacy. Thus it is an expression of intimacy, but being from US myself as well having been born in India, I can understand the cultural opperisions present around Indians. But in short for my brothers, don't put the pussy on a pedistal.

nice post, but what did NIFT people do!? (fact: i am noway associated with NIFT or fashion desgining)

Hey..I am an IITD student, a girl or may be a non-male in IIT guys' nomenclature. In my 4 yrs of IIT life I managed to make very few good guy friends in IITD. I don't think that I am that ugly to look at or that I had less no. of guys wooing me..(I don't want to boast but its true) problem in IIT is when u r not talking to guys they say bhao kha rahi hai and when u talk to them they say chep ho rahi hai..or if u try talking out some work they say kaam nikal rahi hai....how do u start interaction otherwise bcoz the IIT system does not provide many platforms where u get to spend a good amount of time with ur batchmates across different streams. School times were different where u got to spend good 6-8 hrs with ur classmates. There u r left with lot of opportunities to interact with ppl and make friends with opposite sex. So there is less scope of skepticism in school compared to IITs where the guys tend to think tht the girl is talking work only bcoz she wants to get some work done.

Fairly accurate description IMO of any IIT (im from IIT madras), i agree with the "conservative" part. MOst IITians graduate virgins ;-)

I was a B tech student at IITD in the late seventies, and any type of interaction among males and females was a taboo. I was introduced to a non IIT girl by a common friend who became a close personal friend, and started visting me in the hostel. Our friendship during my years at IIT was non conjugal in nature based on mutual respect and understanding. However, anytime she visited me in the hostel, she felt being surrounded by hungry wolves ready to satisy their insatible appetite for a union with an opposite gender. This became known to me as this special friend became my soulmate during our separation while I was in the USA, and later on came into my life as my better half and got to meet a number of my IItian friends. Anytime a female visited our hostel, it was like a tornado of tormenting of unmeasurable intensity ripped through the corridors. I think the hierarchy at such an elite institution should make a note of it, and tkae steps which will make such interaction(s) possible.

This post and all the comments it has gathered ought to be published in the IIT Delhi newsletter asap. These IIT blokes get so sexually frustrated and jealous of us normal humans that they've started devising vicious ways of wreaking revenge. The BRT in Delhi is the latest manifestation of their ire. Someone help!

Hey which entrance exam does one have to crack to be a guard in IITD

Anonymous said...

Very very nice post. I am at IIT Madras and things are even worse for North Indians atleast.

Anonymous said...

LOL!!!
Absolutely true.
In my times B/G ratio was even more skewed in IIT. But I had friends in DU, JNU & JMI etc. to keep company. Whenever life was a bit relaxed (There were rare occassions) I used to hang out with them and they sort of 'lend' me their female friends.
Sex exp came with Def-Col flyover SW

yeah the guard coming out of nowhere is a real nightmare... these ppl watch as much as they can and interupt in the climax... besides its horribly embarrassing... the girl gets so pissed off theres no chance of making out with her agn...
there should be many many more 'jhaadis' in iit delhi...

Hi Everyone! Very interesting and funny post. I was at IIT Bombay and believe it or not I had a girlfriend while I was in high school. During my first year in Hostel 2 when my valentine's day card I was the last person in the hostel to see the card. It was opened and floated all around the hostel and I became very famous!! I was one of the odd IITian to have a gf even while at high school. My honey days ended right at high and days at IIT were full of frustration. Wish I had chosen IIT Delhi instead of IIT Bombay. That way I would have been closer to my gf. She was ex Miss Miranda House in Delhi. When I went to US there my social circle expanded but my communication skill with opposite sex had taken a dent. There should be reservation for women at IIT. I guess that way IIT would produce more balanced engineers:).

Well the sex life needs to be enhanced in IIT Delhi. How??? Beat up that security guard or bribe him. Ask the dude to do it. The rest of the IITians can contribute.

the girls in my batch know how to get work done... they hire the ICs

i am from iitm and here the ratio is way better, probably the best of all the iits. (and anyways with all the new quotas more students are coming in anyway) i am not sure if kids here get any action but definitely, theres the odd guy who gets lucky once in a while while while. girls are queens here, whether they carry the face or not. thats just sad somehow.. but i guess familiarity breeds acceptance in IITs :) its not conservatism or anything high funda, its just lack of opportunity. but having said that, all guys without exception are good and ( hopefully) wont try anything stupid with a girl( its not worth it dudes). girls know their place in the settings and play their cards wisely. which is actually smart and if you ask me the right thing to do. we ought to be like them too a bit, continuing to try our hand no doubt (pun and porn intended)but playing it smart and knowing, believing we are probably in the best place we could be. and when we do come out we will hopefully have someone awesome (and really hot even in a homely sense) out there, waiting. Sigh.

Haha. Funny. ^__^

Slightly off the topic.. I really learn a lot from your profs' videos at Youtube.

I just watch those whenever I need to review. They are really good at explaining really complivcated and hardcore cs/math stuff.

Is it hard to get in that school?
I mean for girls..

How come there are only a few girls there.

Here in the Philippines, there are more males taking CS but I think the ratio is starting to even up.. and I'm glad to say that I'm one of the girls. :)

its begining to improve here man ,
some hot chics turning up to iitd , and actually they made a new hostel here , NEW HIMADRI , SEX RATIO is improving , so is the probability of becoming non-virgin while at iit....

Good fucking god. You people are complete mo-fuckin-rons. Brainless dicks. Plain and simple. How hard can it be to fucking get laid. I live right next to IIT Delhi, and I fuck around more in a month with chicks in SDA market than you people might ever in your lifetime.

Luved it, though not from IITD, my engineering was from a remote small town, even worse than IITD, atleast in our BE Computer batch there were 2 girls out of 70, I was lucky enough to be in the same practical group as them. I guess I was Stud's best friend, except there was no stud. COmputer and Electronics are ok, its even worse for Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical and Civil Engineering streams as there were no girls.

It was only later I learnt the art of hunting cute lil sexy bitches on the sunny beaches of Sydney :)

now that's an analysis..really cool..m in 3rd yr in the same wretched place..

sry... but i disagree i am currently studying in IIT D and i have had sex a couple of times!!!! ;)

shantnu said...

Its the same case in every reputed ''engineering'' college. Good looking girls cracking these xams are a rarity. Being a mechanical engineer myself, i can tell you that most of my friend's taste for girls has become as pathetic as our mess food....and the word ''girl'' rings up every bell of their deires.
such are the conditions that getting a glimpse of a girl makes our day.

now i understand !! some people crack IIT just for having SEX in there !!! u mother fuckers think about ur future @ssholes , fuckin losers !! ( ma self student of IIT BOMBAY {CSE} )
